A Vision Beyond Carbon
BRUGG Group has made sustainability a core focus of their business, working diligently to reduce operational emissions. In 2022, they began measuring their carbon footprint and implemented renewable energy solutions like photovoltaic systems. Recognising that residual emissions were inevitable, BRUGG wanted to accelerate their climate action through a meaningful and long-term approach. As Dr. Wartmann shared in the interview:
“We could have bought certificates from anyone, but that’s not how we wanted to approach it. We wanted a long-term impact, one that also benefits local communities, addressing the social aspect of sustainability, not just the environmental.”
The Rwanda Bamboo River Restoration Project
BRUGG’s commitment led to an investment in developing the Rwanda Bamboo River Restoration Project. The project focuses on planting bamboo along degraded riverbanks to stabilise soil, prevent erosion, and protect farmland from the flooding common in Rwanda’s agricultural regions. The powerful player, giant clumping (sympodial) bamboo, grows rapidly and has deep root systems, making it an effective tool for carbon sequestration and environmental protection.
The project works closely with several villages nationwide, empowering communities to work together to achieve impact at scale. The project generates job opportunities, particularly employing women, promoting gender equity in the region. Additionally, the project is verified and registered with VERRA, ensuring transparency, high accountability, and long-term value for BRUGG.
Seeing the Impact Firsthand
BRUGG Group’s investment decision was solidified after a site visit to the project. Seeing it in action and understanding its potential for long-term impact convinced BRUGG of the value of such partnerships. Witnessing firsthand the inspiring transformation of the local landscape and the hope it brings to communities was a pivotal moment. As Dr. Wartmann shared:
